Spend the day sailing aboard ViVA and spend your evening
at the Captain A.V. Nickels Inn in historic Searsport.

Welcome to the Captain A. V. Nickels Inn on the ocean in Searsport, Maine.
Nestled in a Historic Seaside community, this Sea Captain's mansion is an art of stately elegance and a testimony to the graceful times of it's era. Built in 1874 by Captain A.V. Nickels and placed on the National Registry of Historic Homes, this architectural display of craftsmanship and design is renowned for creating a setting of ambiance and charm. You will be greeted on the sweeping veranda that frames the front with it's Victorian filigree trim and arched framework. As you enter the stained glass doors to the foyer you are met with a turning three story stairway and chandeliers that open to the Captain's Parlor. It is here you might appreciate the ceramic fireplace and ornate mantel or in the Mistress's parlor where you will find the marble fireplace, clawfoot chaise lounge and built-in secretariat. Also available for your stay is access to the guest dining room and sitting room, boardroom and ballroom with all overlooking the Atlantic Ocean as it forms Penobscot Bay. On the 2nd floor guests enjoy full use of the library/media room with full cable, ample shelves of books, games and a relaxing atmosphere. We offer a full gourmet breakfast and evening Hors d’Oeuvres plus internet access.
This grand "ole painted lady" was built by Captain Albert Vinal Nickels in 1874 for his wife, Elizabeth McGilvary and 5 children at the time, which soon came to house three more children. Captain Nickels took command of several ships during his career including his last ship the infamous "Iroquois" built for her speed by Captain Nickels father-in-law, William McGilvary. Ironically, Captain Nickels passed away in 1902 in the same year that the "Iroquois" was ship wrecked passing through the Straits of Sapi from the Indian Ocean. |
